As an iPhone 3 owner for a few years I am a bit depressed about the launch of the iPhone 4. How much better can it be? Are the new iPhone 4 features really worth me upgrading. Am I going to get enough bang for my bucks this time.
iPhone 4 features compared to iPhone 3
The good news for current owners is that this is an upgrade and not a completely new product. It builds on the iPhone 3 operating system and has also had a cosmetic change in the look and fell of the handset.Here are the main changes.
Improved Screen Resolution
You will see immediately how sharp the graphics and apps look on the new 960X640 screen. It overtakes all the Android machines which have been catching up very fast of late. This is the best hand held screen out there as of now (September 2010).
Overall Design
The sexy curves have gone and in their place is an angular box that does not look quite as sleek as the iPhone 3. The fuss mad about signal loss was really a lot of noise and little substance. It works and looks just the same. Just a shame that the old covers do not fit as well so the accessory manufacturers have to sell us another one.
Models Available
The iPhone 4 comes as a 16GB or a 32GB model. You do really need the larger memory to use the video and other multimedia apps so I don't know why Apple have even bothered with the lower spec model. We all know that the iPhone 4 is not just a phone so why limit it?
The New iOS4 Operating system
This is where you start to find the real gold on the iPhone 4. With multitasking and folders you now do not have to press the home button and start again every time you want to change apps or programs. This is a real frustration with my current iPhone3. You don't have to have pages and pages of apps to run through. They can all be organised into folders. You can add and name folders as you wish. Add to this multiple email accounts, and iBook compatibility and you can see that Apple really have been listening to customer feedback.
New And Enhanced iPhone 4 Features
Some of the other new features that come with the operating system include home screen folders to stop you having to scroll through too many pages of apps, a new master email inbox that will display all of your accounts in one place, and iBooks (originally seen on the iPad) for reading and downloading eBooks. The final main addition is that of 30 frames per second video recording. Still modest by other phone models but a good useful feature that was missing.
